| The West Coast Optimist Championships was host by the Sequoia =
Yacht=20
club on the weekend of August 14-15 in the breezy and challenging =
venue of=20
South San Francisco Bay. The champs were part of the Nor Cal =
Junior=20
Olympic Festival and were a qualifier for Opti Team Trials. The =
event drew=20
a large and very talented opti fleet from all over California and =
even a=20
few of our own SYC team members. Katy Cenname and Stuart Renehan =
who were=20
accompanied by fellow northwest sailor Josh Larson. The venue =
truly lived=20
up to it=C2=92s reputation with steady 15 knot winds and huge =
waves, not to=20
mention 3 =C2=BD knots of adverse current at times. On Sunday we =
weren=C2=92t even=20
sure that the opti=C2=92s would be able to make it across the =
start line. In=20
one race the first leg took 23min and the down wind, which was =
twice as=20
long, only took two min. The racing was exciting, close and at =
times=20
hectic, with several opti=C2=92s capsizing and submarining. The =
top 25 percent=20
of the fleet (including the 10 green fleeters) qualified for team =
trials,=20
a group which included Katy with her consistent top finishes. One =
piece of=20
advice that I=C2=92m sure both Katy and Stuart would agree with is =
that we=20
Seattle Sailors need to get out into some big waves and practice =
sailing=20
downwind in tough conditions, so look for some stormy weather this =
winter=20
and challenge yourself!
