Harken Optimist Challenge #3, Cabrillo Beach YC, May 20&21,2006.
24 Optimist sailors were treated to mild breezes and sunshine at CBYC's famed Hurricane Gulch sailing site. The CBYC race committee did a great job keeping the course square and fair. Racing was tight and exciting.
Saturday saw typical Southern California conditions with 12 to 15 kts out of the West. The wind proved solid all day and settled into its oscillating pattern for some good tactical racing. 5 races were held. Saturday evening CBYC held its annual jr. program fundraiser which featured a chili cookoff and auction. The kids and parents had a blast bidding on all sorts of sailing miscellanea. Jack Barton won a wetsuit for $1 and Will Cefali won a pair of Camet hiking pants for $7.
Sunday the wind started out of the South and it was hard to predict which way the wind would go. There was a storm coming so it would be anybodys guess. Typical So Cal strategy would say go right, but the left paid big rewards. Racing was challenging, as the wind was very shifty and light. In the last race, Yuri made all the right moves and finished with a punishing first place horizon job. 3 races were held.
