| OPTI SAILORS HEAD FOR THE GORGE
On August 10th, 2006 a group of young Opti sailors from places such as Alberta Canada, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Pleasant Hill, CA, Vancouver, BC and the Pacific Northwest traveled to Cascade Marine Park, Cascade Locks, OR for the first if it’s kind, Ripple, a clinic for Opti sailors in the wind capital of North America, The Gorge.
Coaches Argy and Bocha from Argentina provided some of the most extensive coaching ever offered for these young sailors. Winds ranged from 7 to 28 + .provided opportunities that exist at very few venues around the globe. From day one until the conclusion of day three, the progress these youngsters made was incredible. Coaches and parents alike noticed the daily improvements in skills acquired in big winds. These kids rocked.
Some families camped at the Port of Cascade Locks camping area others availed themselves of the local hotels. A good time was had by all. Gathering around the camp site dinner table in the evening and also joined by those who chose to rough it at the local Best Western the stories about the kids, their dreams and goals were memorable for all. One young sailor from Thorsby, Alberta, Canada got an early start in the sailing world. Her Aunt who was her guardian at Ripple started her out at 4 years of age accompanying her in Aunties Byte. Now at 4 there are some important things that must be addressed, that being her doll must go along. With duct tape in hand Auntie taped dolly to the mast and off they went. Everyone was happy.
At the conclusion of the three day event hosted by PIYA and the Columbia Gorge Racing Association it was very clear that Ripple must become an annual event. Coaches Argy and Bocha praised the venue, beautiful weather and a constant breeze every day of the event. Planning is already underway for 2007 with the target date early to mid August. See you on the water.
