On October 20 and 21 The San Francisco Yacht Club hosted the San Francisco Bay Optimist Championships. The turnout was very good with over 44 sailors participating. This is the largest championship fleet in California ever.
Saturday's racing was started in the leftover wind from a small front that had passed through the night before. We knew it would probably blow itself out by the evening so the race committe decided to get as many races in as possible. 7 races were sailed and the optis arrived back at the SFYC dock at 5PM, just in time for the BBQ. Winds ranged from 10 to 18 knots. The wind was very steady and the marks were never required to be reset. The racing conditions were perfect with wind speeds for everyone..
Sundays racing was what we expected, very light. 2 races were sailed before the wind altogether died. The last half of the second race saw many finishers fail to finish within the 15 minute time limit, at 2:00PM. At 2:30 the decision was made to abandon all further racing.
Special thanks to our PRO John Super and Jennifer Hull for making the top three finishers awards.
